Strategies Teaching problem solving is a complicated and tricky task. Students who excel at problem solving often possess characteristics such as reading the problem for understanding, using self-regulatory strategies, putting the problem into their own terms, drawing a picture or diagram, hypothesizing, estimating or predicting, computing, and checking their answer for correctness. Students who struggle with problem solving may need to be taught these characteristics in order to be success.
